INSTRUCTIONS RE USE
OF
LACHRYMATORY AND GAS SHELLS

With reference to 15/CA 10/42 dated 17th June 1916:-
1. No Gas Shells are to be used before “Z” Day by either 4.5” Howitzers or 75 mm French Guns.
2. On “Z” Day
(a) Lachrymatory Shells from 4.5” Howitzers are to be fired as laid down in the above quoted instructions.
(b) The Gas Shells from the 75 mm, are to be fired as follows:-
(If the Wind is away from our lines; )
(FRICOURT VILLAGE. )

(In any Wind. ) Or any places
(MAMETZ VILLAGE ) in the Corps
(FRICOURT WOOD ) Area the same
Up to -30’ (ROUND WOOD ) distance or
(SHELTER WOOD. ) further from
(LOZENGE WOOD ) the front line.
(FRICOURT FARM )

Up to Zero (BOTTOM WOOD )
(QUADRANGLE TRENCH )
)
After Zero (Beyond the lines of the final Barrage.)
3. As the Infantry advance close to their final Objective, the distance beyond must be increased; this will vary in accordance with the direction of the wind.
