• AIMING MARK – GROUPING –

For all Units firing with Mark VI. ammunition from the long rifle sighted for Mark VII. ammunition, the centre of the bull’s-eye will in future be placed six inches below the centre of the second class instructional target, and not on its centre as hitherto.

This aiming mark is only to be used for the grouping practices at 100 yards, viz., Practices 1 and 2 of Part I and the first practice of Part III of the General Musketry Course.  For all other practices no alteration is to be made in the existing aiming marks or targets.

496– War Establishments – New Armies –

            In future the establishment during training of an Infantry Battalion, New Army, will be as follows:-

Officers, 30; Warrant Officers and Sergeants, 54; Rank and File, 1,016.  Total, all ranks 1,100.

            To this number of Officers will be added such supernumerary officers as may be or have been appointed to the Unit.

The above figures do not include Reserve Companies, the establishment of which will remain as at present.

492– Depot Companies of Local Battalions 4^th New Army –

             With reference to Northern Command Order 1228 dated 9^th inst – upon the departure of the Brigade from Alnwick at a date to be fixed later, the Depot Companies of the four Battalions will be concentrated under the Command of the Senior Officer of those Companies pending the appointment of an officer selected to Command, and will be quartered in “D” Camp, Alnwick.

The “Home Service Battalion” now quartered in Newcastle will remain there until further orders.

            Command Order No. 523, dated 6^th April, 1915, is re-published for the information of all Units lately arrived in the Command.

 “With reference to the supply of Targets and other Range Stores for Classification and Miniature Ranges, Officers in charge of Ranges or Officers Commanding Units must demand all such articles from the Officer in Charge, Royal Engineer Stores, Infantry Barracks, York.

“See Command Orders No 1606, of 14^th November, 1914, and No. 2 of 1^st January, 1915,

No bills for such articles when irregularly purchased can be passed.

This Order is to be re-published in all Divisional, Brigade, and Regimental Orders.”

Indents for Range Stores should be sent in one week in advance of requirements.

            In order to provide a larger target surface than the present 1^st Class Elementary Target affords, in Practices Nos. 1 and 2, “Grouping” Part I., of the Miniature Range Course, a 2^nd Class Elementary Target will be substituted.  This target is slightly than the present 2^nd Class Elementary Target which is still to be used in Practice I., Part II.  The new target will be issued with the “sets” of miniature targets from the R.E. Stores, York, when the existing 1^st Class Target is exhausted.

474 – Boards –

            Boards for the purpose of checking clothing, equipment, and other Stores, on being taken over by the War Office from the Tyneside Scottish Committee – will assemble as follows:-

475 – Brigade Training –

            It is notified for general information that owing to the assembly of the Boards referred to in Brigade Order No. 474 of July 6^th, 1915, there will be no Brigade Training on Friday, 9^th instant.

476 – Men Found “Unfit for Active Service” –

1. Medical Officers in charge of Battalions will carefully examine all Recruits on joining.  If any of these are, in their opinion “Unfit for Active Service”, they will be examined by the Senior Medical Officer, the Brigade, who will forward his recommendations to Brigade Headquarters.
2. Medical Officers in charge of Battalions will carefully weed out any men whom they consider “Unfit for Active Service”.  The names of such men will be entered on a list –giving Regimental number; Rank; Name; Age; Disease and Date of Enlistment, and the Medical Officer’s Certificate that the men are “Permanently Unfit for Active Service”.  The Medical Officer will also state whether each man is recommended for “Home Service” or “Discharge”. 

This list will be sent to the Senior Medical Officer, the Brigade and authority will be issued for the disposal of these men.

• Medical Officers in charge of Battalions will refer any doubtful cases to the Senior Medical Officer, the Brigade.

465 – Socks – Indents for –

            It has come to notice of the General Officer Commanding that in certain instances the want of serviceable socks has militated against marching – Officers Commanding Battalions will take immediate steps to see that the correct allowance of three pairs of sound socks is in the possession of every man and will arrange for this supply being maintained.

Indents to complete should be sent in at once to Ordnance Officer, Clothing Depot, Carlton Street Store, York.

466 – Hutments – Taking over of by R.E.

            The hutments at Alnwick have now been taken over by the War Department – and will in future be maintained by the Royal Engineers.

Commanding Officers will in future refer all matters relating to Engineer Services to the Divisional Officer, R.E., 13, Belle Grove Terrace, Newcastle-on-Tyne.

            Officers Commanding Units are reminded that “hasteners” should be forwarded to the Chief Ordnance Officer, York, or to Ordnance Officer, Clothing Depot, Carlton Street Store, York, as the case may be, for articles of equipment or clothing required to complete, in order that the Battalions may be completed as far as possible prior to the move of the Brigade to Ripon.
